If you’ve ever wanted to try wood carving, you don’t need much to get started—just a piece of wood and a small knife will do.My love for wood carving began at age seven, sparked by a story my mother told me about my father’s proposal.

Back in the mid-1980s, my parents were driving down a quiet country lane in my dad’s 1968 Ford Mercury. During a lull in conversation, my dad reached under the seat and handed my mom a small, cloth-wrapped object about the size of a lemon. “Unwrap it,” he said, while keeping his eyes on the road.

Inside was a finely hand-carved basswood egg. Dad then told my mom to check the glove compartment, where she found a small whittling knife. “Carve into the egg,” he instructed.

About ten minutes later, wood shavings littered the floor of the truck, and she discovered that the egg was hollow. Inside was a gold engagement ring. Needless to say, she said yes. That early experience showed me how wood carving could hold magic and meaning, which has inspired my love for it ever since.

If you’re ready to give wood carving a try, it’s helpful to start with the basics. Below is everything you need to begin your journey.

What is Wood Carving?

Wood carving is the art of shaping wood into desired forms, objects, or designs using sharp tools. There are many ways to carve, but all follow this general definition. Tools can include knives, chisels, gouges, and even chainsaws for large projects.

It’s easy to confuse wood carving with woodturning. While both use sharp tools to remove wood, woodturning involves a lathe—a motorized device that spins the wood. If your piece is made without a lathe, it’s considered wood carving.

Whittling is another term often misunderstood. It’s simply a basic form of carving, usually done with a small knife.

Types of Wood Carving

The style of carving you choose will influence the tools you need and the techniques you use. Here are some common types:

Whittling
Whittling is the simplest form of carving, involving slicing away small pieces of wood with a straight knife. Beginners can start with any sharp pocket knife, though specialized whittling knives offer more comfort and control. Almost any wood species can be whittled, making it an ideal starting point.

Chip Carving
Chip carving is the removal of small pieces from a flat surface using a chisel or specialized knife. It’s perfect for creating intricate lines or patterns. Beginners often have the best results with basswood, knot-free pine, or poplar.

Relief Carving
This method involves carving a design into a flat piece of wood, creating a subtle three-dimensional effect. Gouges and chisels are commonly used, often with a mallet to push the tools into the wood. Clamps or a bench vise help keep the workpiece stable.

Flat-Plane Carving
Flat-plane carving creates figures or objects using flat facets, which are deliberately left visible. It is usually done with a single carving knife. Basswood is the preferred material for this style because of its ideal softness and hardness balance.

Chainsaw Carving
Chainsaw carving involves sculpting large pieces of wood into figures or objects. This style is typically reserved for experienced carvers due to the aggressive nature of the tool. Safety gear such as hearing protection, face shields, and leg guards is essential.

Key Wood Carving Terms

Carving Knife: A knife with a larger handle and slightly curved blade, different from a standard whittling knife.
Chisel: A straight-edged tool with a beveled edge.
Gouge: A chisel with a curved blade, useful for scooping wood.
Mallet: A wooden or rubber tool used to tap chisels or gouges.
Roughing: Removing large amounts of wood early to approximate the final shape.
Detail Work: Fine carving at the end of a project, such as etching feather details on a duck carving.

Beginner Wood Carving Tips

Keep tools sharp: Dull knives and chisels are frustrating and unsafe. Learn how to sharpen your tools properly.

Carve away from yourself: Always cut away from your hands and fingers to prevent injuries.

Wear safety glasses: Even non-powered carving can produce flying wood chips. Eye protection is essential.

Start simple: Begin with easy projects like a walking stick before moving on to intricate designs.

Choose the right wood: Basswood is ideal for beginners—soft, fine-grained, and easy to shape.

Wood carving is a rewarding hobby that combines patience, creativity, and craftsmanship. Start with small projects, practice consistently, and you’ll soon be able to create beautiful wooden pieces with confidence.
