One of the most delightful signs of spring and summer is watching hummingbirds (Trochilidae) dart between flowers and feeders in search of food.

These tiny birds have fascinated people for generations because of their incredible flying abilities, bright colors, and energetic personalities. Many people enjoy attracting hummingbirds to their gardens with feeders filled with sugar water, where they can observe these amazing creatures up close.

The sound of a hummingbird approaching is unforgettable, often resembling the buzzing of an oversized bee. They move rapidly in every direction, flying back and forth, rising and dropping, then pausing in midair while feeding. Watching one sit on a feeder with its tiny feet and calmly drink sweet nectar is a truly special experience.

Unique Characteristics of Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are remarkable birds with many unusual physical abilities and behaviors. Some of their traits are well known, while others may be surprising even to experienced bird lovers.

1. A Large Variety of Species

There are more than 330 known species of hummingbirds around the world. Many people are familiar with only one species, such as the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, but the hummingbird family is far more diverse than most realize.

Hummingbirds exist only in the Western Hemisphere, with nearly half of all species living near the equator. Only a small percentage live mainly north of Mexico, and roughly two dozen species regularly occur in the United States and Canada. A few species stay year-round along the Pacific Coast of the United States.

2. Hummingbirds Need Huge Amounts of Food

Because hummingbirds have extremely fast metabolisms, they must constantly feed throughout the day to maintain their energy.

They consume a remarkable amount of food compared with their body size, eating around half their body weight in nectar and insects daily. They may feed every 10 to 15 minutes and visit hundreds or even thousands of flowers in a single day.

Although nectar from flowers and feeders provides energy, hummingbirds also eat many small insects, including beetles, ants, aphids, gnats, mosquitoes, and wasps. Their appetite makes them valuable visitors in gardens because they help control insect populations.

3. The Smallest Birds in the World

Hummingbirds are the tiniest birds on Earth. The bee hummingbird of Cuba is the smallest known bird species, weighing only about 1.95 grams, which is roughly equal to the weight of a quarter teaspoon of sugar.

Their eggs are also incredibly small. A Ruby-throated Hummingbird egg is about the size of a pea, and its nest is approximately the size of half a walnut shell.

Because their nests are so small and carefully hidden, it is important to check tree branches and shrubs before trimming gardens during spring cleaning.

4. Female Hummingbirds Build the Nests

Female hummingbirds are responsible for constructing nests and caring for young. They usually lay only two eggs at a time.

Male hummingbirds do not participate in raising the chicks and often seek another mate after breeding. Once the eggs hatch, young hummingbirds remain in the nest for around three weeks before becoming independent.

5. Long-Distance Travelers

Many people are surprised to learn that hummingbirds migrate. Some individuals travel more than 2,000 miles twice each year.

During winter, many hummingbirds move to Mexico or Central America. When spring approaches, they travel north toward breeding areas in the United States.

Before beginning migration, hummingbirds increase their body weight by approximately 25 to 40 percent to build energy reserves. They usually travel alone and often follow familiar routes used in previous years.

These birds typically migrate during daylight hours when food sources are easier to find. Flying at lower heights allows them to locate flowers and feeding areas along the way. Research suggests some hummingbirds can travel around 23 miles in a single day.

6. Incredible Flying Abilities

Hummingbirds have flight skills unlike almost any other bird. They can move forward, fly backward, and even maneuver upside down.

They are also the only group of vertebrates capable of maintaining a true hovering position for extended periods while flying.

7. Amazing Speed and Strength

Along with their agility, hummingbirds are surprisingly fast. They can reach speeds of nearly 30 miles per hour during normal flight and exceed 45 miles per hour during courtship dives.

Their internal systems also work at incredible speeds. A hummingbird’s heart rate can range from about 225 beats per minute while resting to more than 1,200 beats per minute during flight.

Their wings usually beat around 70 times per second during regular flight and can exceed 200 beats per second during dramatic diving displays.

8. Hummingbirds Also Need Rest

Although hummingbirds are known for constant activity, they also have a unique way of conserving energy. They can enter a deep resting state called torpor.

During torpor, their metabolism slows dramatically, body temperature decreases, and energy use is reduced. This adaptation helps them survive cold conditions or periods when food is difficult to find.

A hummingbird’s normal body temperature is around 105°F, but torpor allows it to temporarily drop much lower. If this state continued for a long time, it would be considered hibernation, but hummingbirds typically use torpor for shorter periods.

9. Hummingbirds Are Highly Territorial

Despite their small size, hummingbirds are often aggressive when defending food sources.

They are generally solitary birds and frequently compete with one another around flowers and feeders. When several hummingbirds gather in one area, it often leads to fast aerial chases.

During mating season, males become especially competitive. They perform impressive displays by moving back and forth before using their sharp bills during fights with rivals.

10. Exceptionally Intelligent Birds

Hummingbirds have surprisingly large brains compared with their body size. Their brains account for about 4.2 percent of their total weight, giving them one of the highest brain-to-body ratios among birds.

Research shows that hummingbirds can remember migration paths and recognize individual flowers they have visited before. They can even estimate how long they need to wait before returning to a flower so it has time to produce more nectar.

Some studies also suggest that hummingbirds are capable of recognizing humans.

Threats Facing Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds usually live around five years in the wild, although some individuals can survive for more than ten years.

Like many wildlife species, they face several challenges caused by both natural and human-related factors.

Climate Change

Changing temperatures caused by climate change are affecting hummingbird migration patterns. Some species are appearing in areas outside their traditional ranges, which may make it harder for them to locate suitable food sources.

Over time, these changes could negatively affect hummingbird populations.

Habitat Destruction

Loss of natural habitat is one of the biggest threats to hummingbirds. Urban expansion, farming, logging, and development in tropical regions reduce the areas where these birds can find food and shelter.

Because hummingbirds are so small and depend on specific plants, even small environmental changes can have serious consequences.

Praying Mantis Predation

Although it may seem surprising, praying mantises can sometimes capture and kill hummingbirds.

Despite being much smaller than hummingbirds, mantises may hide near feeders and use their quick reflexes to attack. If a praying mantis appears at a hummingbird feeder, it is best to carefully move it elsewhere rather than harm it, since mantises also help gardens by eating insects.

Invasive Plants

Some ornamental plants introduced into gardens may look attractive but provide little value for hummingbirds.

Non-native plants often fail to produce the nectar these birds need, so choosing native flowering plants can help create a better habitat for them.

Setting Up a Hummingbird Feeder

If you enjoy watching hummingbirds, setting up a feeder is a simple way to attract them while supporting their need for frequent feeding.

A feeder filled with homemade nectar can provide an important energy source and offer the chance to observe these incredible birds closely.

There is no need to remove feeders too early in the year. Hummingbirds naturally know when it is time to migrate and will not delay their journey simply because food is available.

Keeping feeders available until mid or late September can help provide nourishment for late-season migrants traveling south.
