Nero’s Magnificent Golden Palace in Ancient Rome

After the devastating fire that swept through Rome in 64 AD and destroyed large parts of the city center, Emperor Nero began the construction of an extraordinary new imperial residence. Known throughout history as the Domus Aurea, or “Golden House,” the palace became a symbol of unmatched luxury, ambition, and extravagance.

The Creation of Nero’s Grand Palace

The Domus Aurea was designed by the architects Severus and Celer, with its lavish artistic decoration created by the painter Fabullus. Unlike traditional palaces, the complex was not a single building but an enormous collection of structures surrounded by gardens, forests, vineyards, and an artificial lake located in the valley where the Colosseum now stands.

The main sections of the palace were built on the Palatine Hill and the Oppian Hill. These areas were renowned for their extraordinary interiors, where gold, gemstones, painted decorations, stucco details, and colorful marble were combined to create an atmosphere of overwhelming richness.

The vast imperial residence included luxurious bathing facilities with both regular and sulfur-rich waters, numerous dining halls, and the famous rotating banquet room known as the coenatio rotunda. A massive entrance hall also displayed a gigantic statue of Nero portrayed as the Sun God, emphasizing the emperor’s desire to present himself as a divine figure.

The Abandonment and Burial of the Palace

Following Nero’s death, later Roman emperors attempted to remove reminders of his controversial reign. The decorations, sculptures, and precious materials were stripped from the palace, while many of its rooms were deliberately filled with earth until the ceilings were covered.

These buried spaces were later used as foundations and support structures for new buildings constructed above them, causing much of Nero’s once-glorious residence to disappear from view for centuries.

Rediscovery During the Renaissance

The sections of the Domus Aurea that visitors can explore today are mainly located on the Oppian Hill. These rooms were likely used for celebrations, entertainment, and imperial banquets.

After being buried, the palace remained hidden until the Renaissance period. Accidental discoveries led artists fascinated by ancient Rome, including Pinturicchio, Ghirlandaio, Raphael, and Giulio Romano, to enter the underground chambers.

They viewed the decorated rooms as mysterious underground caves and studied the ancient wall designs, copying their imaginative patterns in their own artwork. Because of this association with caves, these decorations became known as “grotesques.”

Today, the term “grotesque painting” refers to a decorative style that became especially popular during the 16th century. It is based on Roman wall ornamentation but transforms ancient motifs into creative, playful, and imaginative compositions.
