Draw A Realistic Cat Step by Step

Want to create an adorable, lifelike cat drawing, even if you’ve never attempted animal sketches before?

In this step-by-step guide, I’ll walk you through how I drew and colored this fluffy cat using alcohol markers, then added finishing touches with colored pencils and a white paint pen.

From outlining the tail to adding realistic fur textures and delicate whiskers, I’ll show every stage of the process. I’ll also share tips on what I would adjust next time to avoid common pitfalls.

Materials I Used

For this drawing, I used Ohuhu Honolulu alcohol markers in the following colors:

Baby Blossoms (R270)

Colocasia Torino (R282)

Warm Grey 05 (WG050)

Vert Caledon (E432)

Dragon Well Tea (E434)

Neutral Grey 02 (CG020)

Neutral Grey 03 (CG030)

Neutral Grey 3 (NG03)

Neutral Grey 07 (CG070)

Neutral Grey 6 (NG06)

Neutral Grey 9 (NG09)

Tip: Black (120) can be used instead of Neutral Grey 9 (NG09) as they appear similar.

I also used Derwent Chromaflow colored pencils (White 2400 and Black 2300) for details, plus a white Posca PC-3M paint marker for highlights. Additional tools included an HB pencil, a ruler, a standard eraser, and a kneaded eraser.

The drawing was created on A4 Canson Illustration Manga Paper.

Step 1: Outline the Cat

Begin by sketching the general shape of your cat.

Start with the fluffy tail and the arched back of the sitting cat.

Add two lines in a slight V-shape on the left side of the tail for the front legs.

Draw two curved lines: one along the arched back, another on the far left.

Outline the head, leaving space for the ears. It’s roughly rectangular with the bottom open.

Sketch a diagonal line from the right corner to create the edges of the front legs.

Complete the outline with the ears.

Step 2: Draw the Cat’s Face

Begin with a triangular nose and a Y-shaped line underneath.

Add details to the ears: a squiggly line on the left and an elongated L-shape on the right.

Mark the separation between white and grey fur.

Draw the eyes: the right one egg-shaped, the left resembling a plum pit.

Step 3: Add Fur Patterns

Sketch the division between grey and white fur.

Draw the whiskers. This completes the basic sketch.

Step 4: Color the Nose and Eyes

Lighten your pencil lines with an eraser before adding color.

Use alcohol markers for smooth, vibrant coverage.

Color the eyes with Vert Caledon (E432) and the nose with Baby Blossoms (R270).

Add shading around the eyes with Dragon Well Tea (E434) and Neutral Grey 07 (CG070).

Darken the bottom of the nose with Colocasia Torino (R282).

Step 5: Color the Fur

Begin with Warm Grey 05 (WG050) for grey areas and Neutral Grey 02 (CG020) for white fur.

Use the chisel edge of the marker to simulate fur texture.

Add shading with Vert Caledon (E432) on grey areas, Neutral Grey 3 (NG03) on the tail, and Neutral Grey 03 (CG030) for white fur shadows.

Layer darker fur tones with Neutral Grey 07 (CG070) on the tail and warm grey areas.

Add the deepest shades with Neutral Grey 6 (NG06) and Neutral Grey 9 (NG09) on the tail, head, and back.Tip: Avoid making white fur too dark by choosing lighter grey tones for subtle shading.

Step 6: Add Final Details

Use Derwent Chromaflow pencils to enhance dark and light fur areas.

Use the white paint marker to restore highlights and add fine shine.

Darken shadows and add fur depth with the black pencil.

Add whiskers delicately with the white paint marker.

Your realistic cat drawing is now complete!
