Hummingbirds and Their World

Hummingbirds are small, energetic birds with dazzling, jewel-like appearances. These tiny creatures are relatively easy to attract to gardens and provide endless fascination. Observing hummingbirds offers a glimpse into the remarkable adaptations that enable survival in nature.

What Are Hummingbirds?

Hummingbirds belong to the family Trochilidae, with swifts as their closest relatives. They are extremely small, weighing between 2 and 20 grams, with elongated, narrow bills and short, agile wings shaped like sabers.

Many males, and occasionally females, display a colorful patch on their throat called a gorget—a set of stiff, reflective feathers that glimmer when sunlight strikes them. Depending on the angle, these feathers may appear nearly black until the sun hits them, revealing vivid metallic colors.

Record-Breaking Traits

The Smallest Birds: The Cuban bee hummingbird weighs only 1.95 grams, theoretically allowing 16 birds to fit in a single first-class envelope. The calliope hummingbird, the fourth smallest bird species, weighs 2.5 grams and lives in western North America.

Tiny Eggs: Hummingbirds lay one or two eggs that are no bigger than peas, nestled in nests roughly the size of walnut shells. These nests are woven from spider silk and plant fibers.

Flying Marvels: Hummingbirds can power their wings both on the downstroke and upstroke, giving them unmatched aerial agility. They are the only vertebrates capable of sustained hovering, and they can also fly backward and upside-down. Ruby-throated hummingbirds can reach nearly 30 mph in normal flight and exceed 45 mph during mating dives. Migratory species can cross the Gulf of Mexico in 18–20 hours, fueled by fat reserves and favorable winds.

Life in the Fast Lane

A ruby-throated hummingbird’s heart rate can jump from 225 beats per minute at rest to over 1,200 during flight. Their wings beat 70 times per second during regular flight and more than 200 times per second during diving.

Torpor: A Survival Strategy

Hummingbirds enter a state called torpor, a deep, sleep-like condition in which metabolism slows, and body temperature drops. This allows them to conserve energy at night or in harsh conditions. With minimal insulation and high metabolic demands, torpor is essential for survival, enabling them to maintain their normal body temperature of around 105°F.

Where Hummingbirds Live

Hummingbirds are restricted to the Americas, ranging from Tierra del Fuego in the south to southern Alaska in the north. They inhabit habitats from deserts below sea level to tropical rainforests and can live at altitudes of up to 16,000 feet in the Andes.

Most species live in tropical areas. In the United States, 17 species breed, mostly near the Mexican border, with the ruby-throated hummingbird being the only species nesting east of the Mississippi River.

The Constant Search for Food

Hummingbirds have extremely high energy requirements, so they constantly seek nectar-rich flowers. Seasonal blooming patterns influence their movement. For example, in the western U.S., hummingbirds migrate through lowlands in spring and ascend mountains in summer, following the blooming of meadow plants.

During breeding, they also feed on small insects, which they catch while hovering. In northern or high-altitude areas, hummingbirds rely on sap wells created by woodpeckers, taking advantage of the sugary sap for energy.

Territorial and Feisty

Hummingbirds are largely solitary and aggressive. They defend flower patches from rivals and often engage in high-speed aerial chases. Males and females do not form lasting pair bonds; females rear the young alone. Territories ensure access to the nectar, and the birds aggressively chase intruders to protect these vital resources.

In tropical regions, some males gather in leks, communal display sites, to compete for the attention of females. Females visit these leks and select mates based on the displays.

Hummingbirds and Flowers

Hummingbirds play a critical role in pollination. Flowers that attract them provide abundant, sugary nectar—typically around 26% sugar, double that of soda. Hummingbird-pollinated flowers are often red or orange, tubular, and hang downward, facilitating feeding. Long stamens deposit pollen on the bird’s head, aiding cross-pollination. While some hummingbirds specialize in certain flowers, most feed on a variety of plants.
