The Strangest Pigments in the History of Art

 

Artists throughout the ages have sought the perfect colors, sometimes turning to the most unexpected sources. From crushed mummies to toxic minerals, the history of art is filled with pigments that are as fascinating as they are unusual. Here are some of the most extraordinary pigments ever used in painting.  

Mummy Brown  

This macabre pigment was made from ground-up Egyptian mummies, creating a rich, warm brown. Popular among European artists in the 18th and 19th centuries, it was prized for its transparency in glazes. However, once painters discovered its gruesome origin, many abandoned it, and by the early 20th century, it had largely disappeared from artists’ palettes.  

Dragon’s Blood  

Despite its mythical name, this deep red pigment came from the resin of certain tropical trees, such as the Dracaena or rattan palm. Used since ancient times, it appeared in medieval manuscripts and Renaissance paintings. However, its tendency to fade made it unreliable, and it was eventually replaced by more stable synthetic reds.  

Indian Yellow  

One of the most peculiar pigments, Indian Yellow was originally made from the urine of cows fed only mango leaves. This produced a bright, golden hue that was highly valued in Indian miniatures and later adopted by European artists. When the inhumane treatment of the cows was revealed, production ceased, and modern substitutes took its place. 

Ultramarine from Lapis Lazuli  

The finest blue pigment of the Renaissance came from lapis lazuli, a gemstone mined in Afghanistan. So costly that it was often reserved for depictions of the Virgin Mary’s robes, ultramarine symbolized divinity and wealth. Its rarity made it more expensive than gold, and artists sometimes waited years for a small supply.  

Kermes and Cochineal  

These vivid reds were derived from insects—Kermes from Mediterranean scale insects and Cochineal from Central American beetles. Both were labor-intensive to produce, requiring thousands of insects for a small amount of pigment. They were used in everything from illuminated manuscripts to royal textiles before synthetic dyes became available. 

Orpiment and Realgar  

These arsenic-based minerals provided intense yellow and orange tones but were highly poisonous. Orpiment was used in ancient Egypt, while Realgar appeared in Chinese and European art. Their toxicity made them dangerous to handle, and safer alternatives eventually replaced them.  

Lead White  

For centuries, this pigment was essential for creating highlights and opaque layers in paintings. However, prolonged exposure caused lead poisoning, leading to severe health problems for many artists. Despite its dangers, it remained in use until the development of non-toxic whites like titanium dioxide.  

Emerald Green  

This brilliant green pigment, made from copper acetoarsenite, was both beautiful and deadly. Widely used in the 19th century, it was later discovered to release toxic arsenic vapors. Some believe it may have contributed to the illnesses of artists and even historical figures like Napoleon.  

Tyrian Purple  

Produced from the secretions of Mediterranean sea snails, this luxurious purple was so expensive that only royalty could afford it. Ancient Phoenicians and Romans prized it for its rich, colorfast hue, but its production was so laborious that it eventually fell out of use.
